Pumpkin in July

Hey friends!

We survived another weekend and if you were me, it would be just barely.  You see, I had a particularly tough personal training session on Saturday morning and somehow didn’t refuel enough throughout the day.  Then I indulged in a few glasses of wine over several hours at a going away/engagement party and, well, I ended up feeling like crap Sunday!  I couldn’t even make it to my 9a spin class.  Argh.  But I did manage to eek out 25  min of high intensity on the elliptical along with some ab work.  Somethin’ is better than nothin’ right?

The mother’s group I hosted on Friday was lovely!  I wish I would have taken a pic of the spread, but suffice it to say the chocolate fudge donuts went over quite well Winking smile

Best part of the weekend?  My bestie is in Cali for the week to visit her family and show off tater tot!  She, her hubby and the tot spent last night with us and will spend Friday night with us.  And it also just happened to be A’s birthday a couple weeks ago so per her request, I made a pumpkin cake!

I followed this recipe for Pumpkin Dump Cake with only minor mods: no nuts, an added dash (or two) of cinnamon, and dark chocolate chips instead of toffee (bestie loves dark chocolate).  And I used ~4 full graham crackers to get the 1 cup coarsely chopped.  My cake took about 53 min at 350 deg.  Check it out:

Pumpkin in July was a huge hit! Open-mouthed smile

Oh and I wanted to say thank you for the supportive comments on my last post about mother’s guilt.   It is a dialogue I’d like to probe into more and perhaps find some solutions to alleviate this guilt many of us are experiencing.

What can you eat despite the season?  Pumpkin is an obvious one for me as is froyo in December

The truth about how I exercise

Remember when I talked about my Goldilocks’s weight here?  And I still stand by the fact, that generally speaking, I’m okay with being 5’4.5″ and 116 lbs.  Then again, when you have to caveat something so much, there is probably an inkling of untruth in there, huh? ;)

Part of the reason I call it my Goldilocks’ weight is because I can maintain with moderate exercise.  I may b*tch and moan about wanting to lose more or toning up a bit, but the truth is, I don’t really put that much time and effort into my exercise.

I must admit, that I feel “less than”, lazy, and a slacker compared to other blogger’s fitness routines.

While the blog world can be motivating to try new things, push yourself harder, and attempt new activities, it can also result in comparisons and feeling like you have to exercise in the same manner as other bloggers.

So maybe you are more like me and can’t hang with the die-hards out there.  If so, I wanted to share what I find to be realistic for my lifestyle.

Here is an honest 2 week snapshot of what exercise is like for me:

  • Sunday: Maybe a Spinning class at Gold’s Gym (with 5 minutes of abs and 10 minutes on the treadmill at 3.6mph to warm up for class)
  • Monday: Nada.  I don’t work out on Mondays.
  • Tuesday: 40 minutes in my complex gym, which would include 20 minutes on the elliptical at level 5 resistance and then walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes at 4.0 mph at a 0.5 deg grade.  Less than 5 minutes of abs follow.
  • Wednesday: Nada.  I don’t work out on Wednesdays either (usually they are date nights).
  • Thursday: Back to the apartment gym for a 45 minute treadmill workout.  20 minutes slow jogging at 5.5mph and 25 minutes alternating 1-5 deg at 4.0 mph.  About 3-5 minutes of ab work follows.
  • Friday: Nada — who wants to take a second shower before going out?
  • Saturday: Maybe a hike or walking the Stanford Dish trail.  If not either of those, a repeat of complex gym cardio from Tues or Wed.
  • Sunday: Complex gym again (hey it’s convenient), where I’ll do a random hodgepodge of free weights (usually 5-10lbs) 16x’s in 3 sets and very little machine work.  Maybe an additional 20 minute walk on the treadmill at 4.0mph.
  • Monday: See previous Monday — no workout.
  • Tuesday: Run intervals on treadmill and by intervals I mean 2 minutes at 4.0 mph at 1deg and 1-2 minutes at 6.5 mph at 0.5 deg incline.  Hardly pushing it huh?  I’ll do this for maybe 35-40 minutes.  Of course, followed by ab work for a few minutes (planks and such).
  • Wednesday: I got nothin’ for ya.
  • Thursday: 20 minute precor, 20 minutes on the treadmill at my complex gym followed by ab work.  Easy, minimal sweat workout.
  • Friday: Might go to Bikram if it’s my off-Friday from work, in which case I feel awesome and always tell myself I need to go to Bikram more.
  • Saturday: Easy cardio (light jog) or incline walking on the complex treadmill for 40 minutes.  Ab work to follow.

There you have it.  It’s clear I’m not living up some of my fabulous fellow bloggers.   Why?  Well one reason is that I’m not training for a marathon or Iron Man or some equally as exciting and challenging.  Why else?  I simply don’t have the time.  No that’s not totally true – I don’t choose to allocate more time to working out.  My day includes 9-10 hours of work, 30+ minutes of animal duty, 30+ min of chores / clean up, etc, 1 hr of meal prep (and maybe eating), and 9 hours of sleep. Yep, I need nearly 9 hours of sleep.  I can deal with 8, but anything less and it’s just no good, plain and simple.  Oh yeah, the remainder of the hours, I’m probably watching my DVRed shows or blogging

I guess my point is, that I can’t really complain about my weight and the lack of tone if I’m not willing to spend the time and effort to make it happen, right?  And if that’s the case, I need to be at peace with my limitations and also my successes.

Do you feel pressure to work out like other bloggers?

How often do you workout per week?  As you can see, I’m at 4-5 times for an average of about 50-60 minutes.

Too short weekends just give you Insight

Ahh weekends are always way too short and also way too filled with taboo eats like maple covered peanuts, candy corn, Food Should Taste Good sweet potato chips, Papa John’s Pizza, pumpkin scones..yeah I could go on, but I won’t because it’s making me feel guilty.  Almost as guilty as I felt on Saturday when I missed my BodyPump class because I was up at 3a getting profusely sick.  Lovely.  At least I got in a sweaty Bikram workout on Friday and a Spinning class today.

So all you’re going to get is a little Insight from me…

30 Days of Insight: Day 7 – Favorite cover of your favorite song. This one seems odd to me..why would I like the favorite cover of my favorite song and not the original?  I’m probably over-thinking this, but I’m truthfully drawing a blank.  If I was all caught up on Glee episodes, I think I may have an easier time :) .  I do like the most recent remake of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, so we’ll go with that one for now.

What’s your favorite cover song?

Day 8 – Someone you think would make a good president.  Ahh yes, let’s get politically familiar on a food blog ;)   I am pretty damn happy with our President.  Not only does he have intelligence, charisma, and class, but he is an incredible orator and is 100% authentic in my opinion.  I’ve also thought Kofi Annan would make a great president.  This would be a far easier question if it was “Someone you thought would NOT make a good president”: Mel Gibson, Jon Gosselin, Lindsay Lohan, Jesse James…you get the picture!

Who do you think would make a good president?  Who’d make a terrible president?
