Peanut oil is my nemesis

Happy Monday!  Happy Mother’s Day (a day late)! And congrats to Animal Kingdom, winner of the Kentucky Derby :)

If you haven’t had a chance, go check out my guest post at The Healthy Apron.  And stick around her blog to check out the rest of the awesomeness.  She does a series on “Is it Healthy” that is crazy informative!

Now as you know from my Friday post, I was amped to root for Derby Kitten and don a big floppy hat and sundress.  The day started out well enough — good workout, fresh highlights to my hair, an updated pedi with OPI Second Honeymoon as the polish du jour.  I was ready!

We found Naava’s hat so she could be a proper lady at the party:

Ladies ready for the Derby

We were also able to score some Derby-appropriate menswear for Zach:

Pink polo and white linen pants

Off we went to K and R’s with Naava in tow.  Immediately we were greeted with Mint Juleps and passed appetizers of deviled eggs and bacon wrapped cantaloupe:

Zach assures me they were good

Oh and don’t forget the bourbon balls:

Chocolate grenache infused with bourbon and rolled in pecans -- strong!

So all was going quite well, except that it was rather chilly and I didn’t get a chance to get much sun on my pasty legs.  That and I didn’t want to be annoying blogger and take pics of R’s friends and all their great hats for the blog. So, hence the lack of additional hat photos :?   But I assure, you the ladies looked fab!

Now onto where it all went downhill.  It started with these:

(Jalapeno?) Hush puppies and sweet potato chips

This was the first of the apps that I really ate, so I kind of dove in.  I had 2.5 hush puppies and probably a handful of chips.  Nom!  So good!

Then I started getting stomach pains.

Bad ones.

I sipped some water and walked away from the food and let Zach know I was potentially dying (no, I’m not dramatic).

After momentarily sitting and removing my blazer, I knew a bathroom was in order.  And, well, I’ll spare you the details, but let’s just say I was laying on the bathroom floor in a pool of sweat (that rivaled any Bikram class I have been to) and shivered and whimpered for a good half hour.

Damn you peanut oil.

This is now the 5th time this has happened to me.  I almost never eat fried food.  The only “fried” food I eat comes in the form of tortilla chips at Mexi restaurants, where the previous 4 attacks have started.

Luckily I brought a change of clothes (because I knew I’d get cold) and quickly changed into jeans, a long sleeved tee, my blazer, and then Zach’s hoodie (and was still shivering).

Because I’m a freak, I actually was hungry and nommed on two buns and then quite a few strawberries.  The buns were fine, the strawberries not so much.

So much for indulging on all the good eats and showing it all off.  Hurumph.

Has anyone had any experience like this with peanut oil?  Advice?

If you “know” something is not good for, do you eat it anyway?

Derby Kitten for the win!

How was your Cinco de Mayo friends?  Nursin’ a tequila hangover?  Lucky for me, my vice is vino and not tequila ;)

This weekend we have another celebration — a combination Birthday / 137th Kentucky Derby party.

Because why not combine the two?  There’s a dress code for this party, however.  Ladies must wear a sundress and hat.  Theme party?  Don’t mind if I do.  And since my dog is a “lady” and we plan on brining her, I will surely make sure she is wearing a hat (so what if it’s from her Halloween costume).

I offered to bake something for the shindig and would you believe I was handily turned down!  The host says he wants all his menu to be consistent and doesn’t want me tainting it with my renegade baking (yes, I jest, but this is close to what he said..haha, right K?).  So we shall come equipped with vino since what derby doesn’t have vino?

I know nothing about the horses racing, but figured it’d be fun to find one to root for.  And since there wasn’t a horse named after a shoe, I went with a horse named after one of my favorite types of pets: Derby Kitten.

I have no idea of her stats and I don’t care.  Her name is cute!  Here’s a list of the other racers:

I gotta tell ya, I’m also loving the names Pants on Fire and Stay Thirsty.

Play along, which horse are you rooting for?
