I’m not a diner kind of girl. As a kid, I rarely went to them. It wasn’t a Sunday ritual. It wasn’t part of the routine. Places like Denny’s and Perkins were poo-pooed. In Madison, there was one diner that somehow made the “acceptable” list and that was the Monty’s Blue Plate Diner, probably because they offered plenty of vegetarian and vegan fare and were heavy on veggies and low on grease. And their baked goods were divine. Seriously check out the menu!
And then I met my hubby. More than once, on the way home from snowboarding in Tahoe or on some random Saturday morning, he’d want to go to Denny’s. Really, Denny’s? I didn’t know people actually went there. And then I went. And dangit, pancakes anywhere are pretty darn good in my world.
But up in the SF Bay Area we also have something called Hobbee’s.
To me, Hobbee’s is synonymous with their ridiculously tasty huge slices of blueberry coffee cake with melted butter on top. I’m unable to ever go there without getting one. And while I have gone for lunch (only once), their breakfast items are where it’s at.
And last Friday I was craaaaaving breakfast for dinner. This actually seemed like quite the brilliant idea to me since whenever I eat breakfast out, I feel like a lard@ss all day because I’m not used to so much food in the AM. But for dinner, bring it on baby, bring it on.
My hubby was equally as jazzed about this idea and so we spent our rockin’ Friday night at the local diner. And we went to town! Check out what Zach got:
- Best Darn Breakfast in Town with the blueberry coffee cake (that I dug into before the pic)
- Side of turkey bacon
- And entire side (that cost more than his main meal) of De Anza Hashbrowns, which included guac, cheese, and who knows what else
And these my friends were what I was craving:
Yep, sometimes you just want pancakes. These are soo dense and filling and I love them like a fat kid loves cake. They also have fluffy delicious sweet potato pancakes that I love equally.
The waitress was trying to convince Zach to swap his hashbrowns (that came with his main meal) with a side of fruit, but then I interjected and said, “well those are actually for me.”
In what I’d like to think was record time, our plates were cleared…as in it looked like a dog might have licked them clean.
The waitress came over, eyes bugged out, and said “I’m impressed — apparently you two had a plan!” Um yeah…we have no shame.
Are you a diner person? What’s your favorite? And what do you get?
