A week in VA

Hey hey!

I’m looking forward to blogging so much more now that the (self-inflicted) pressure is off.  Your support of my atypical HLB-blogging ways totally lifted my spirits. Thanks!  And while I did intend to blog last week on vacation, the idea of blogging on Zach’s iPad was a turnoff, so I just said screw it.  Ooo speaking of Apple products, I ordered the new iPhone 5.  I still have the 3Gs, which feels ancient compared to Zach’s phone so I bit the bullet and ordered a new one.  The main reason is that I seem to take 99% of Bean pics using my phone and the newer iPhones have much better cameras.

Anyway, last week, well the 7th to the 16th, we were in Charlottesville visiting Zach’s family.  I’m still trying to decide if it was a vacation. Sure I didn’t have to work, but taking care of bean nearly all day every day is most definitely ‘work.’  Particularly since he’s a squirmy little bugger and needs to be watched a lot more than when he was stationary (btw, I missed his 8mo update, but will post a 9mo update).

Rather than bore you to tears with a wordy recap of our trip, here are some highlights:

Polo match at King Winery:

Drinking at Sips for Cookie’s (MIL) Birthday:

Walking around the downtown mall:

Date night at Hamilton’s where I ordered the best veggie plate I’ve ever had:  Mini eggplant parmesan, a savory tofu with tomato chutney, green beans with chevre and marcona almonds, roasted beets in a vinaigrette, and a stufffed poblano with a kalmata tapenade.  So so so good.  Oh and lots of bubbly.  And err, maybe Sweet Frogs too.

Apple picking at Carter Mountain:

Hiking at Humpback Ridge:

And tailgating at the UVA- Penn game (Bean only lasted about 10 minutes at the actual game)

Not highlights:

Getting on our small puddle jumper plane from Charlottesville to Dulles, only to have to de-board after the door wouldn’t shut (some metal piece broke off).  This resulted in us missing our flight and staying in VA an extra day.  The bonus was more family time, the negative was feeling exhuasted and rushed on Sunday when we returned.  Bean was pretty happy we stayed:

Bean on a plane.  It was a cinch taking bean to NYC/Boston in May (5mo).  Doing a similar cross-country flight at 8.5mo is not fun.  Seriously.  We were equipped with formula, water, puffs, books, teething rinks, binkies, etc, but bottom line is bean did not want to sit on our laps for 5 hours.  He’s just way too autonmous right now.  Luckily he didn’t scream, but he definitely whined.  He’s lucky he’s so darn cute.  Oh and did I tell you that the flight we missed the day before, I was bumped to First Class…yeah didn’t get that on the new flight.  Argh.

Besides all that, I am loving the cooler temps and the onset of Fall.  I have already welcomed the season with the Candy Corn Oreos (delish) and some Candy Corn M&M’s (just okay, but will be fun to bake with).

More importantly, I am digging out the boots and skinny jeans.  I also have an itch to shop and freshen up the Fall wardrobe.

And I think I may be making applecrisp this weekend.

All in all, not too shabby.

How are you welcoming the Fall?

Snacky Snackerson

Happy Wednesday friends!  It’s my Friday, don’t be to jealous Green with envy  You see, Saturday is my baby shower, so tonight my Mom is arriving, tomorrow afternoon my MIL, and tomorrow night my bestie.  Yipppeee!

But back to today’s topic at hand: SNACKS!

Pregnant or not pregnant, I’m a snacker.  I like to eat a little something every 2-3 hours (lately it’s more like 1.5 to 2) so I’m constantly stocking up on easy-to-go items that can fit in my purse or in my desk drawer.  Come on, tell me that you have a desk drawer at work filled with food Smile with tongue out  Another story for another time is about how I no longer have a snack drawer due to some pesky mice that went to town on my snacks.  Watch out mousies – my wrath is way worse than a mouse trap (I kid, I kid).

Okay back to it.

I’m all about healthy snacks: apples, almonds, a short ingredient protein bar, but sometimes I want a snack that truly tastes like a snack.  Below are my latest top snacks:

  • Popchips!  Thanks to Marssie, I was sent an entire box of these goodies! I had seen these little bags all over stores and the blogworld, but had yet to try them out.  I’m officially hooked.  I’ve had the Parmesan and the BBQ, while the hubby has had the Salt’n’vinegar.  Verdict: awesome.  I am now incorporating a bag a day in my life Smile Totally hits that salty-chip-craving, but in a healthier, lighter, low-cal form.  WIN! And, what’s great is that they are from San Francisco – love supporting local companies!

  • Candy corn: I’m an addict.  I really am.  It’s my favorite seasonal candy and it’s not too high in cals either – win!  And thanks to some twitter buddies, they clued me in on mixing candy corn with roasted peanuts.  Salty and sweet – life’s perfect combo Open-mouthed smile

  • Trader Joe’s maple cookies: Have you had them?  If not, why not???  They are sinfully delicious and so perfect for the Fall.  Who cares if I have slight addiction with maple – it just matches other addictions (like pumpkin), so I’m going to roll with it
  • Frozen yogurt: I never craved ice cream like I do now.  And with the pure genius that is self-serve froyo places, I’ve been in gluttonous bliss.  I’m all about the toppings – cookie dough, heath, snickers….

  • Chocolate: Normally I can say yay or nay to chocolate, but lately, my sweet tooth is on overload, so I love having just mini-Snickers (stolen from a coworker’s candy jar) or even a few chocolate chips just to get my fix.   Last night I may had a Reeses PB pumpkin Smile with tongue out

So yeah, not all of these are snacks on the go, but Popchips certainly are and I’ve already stashed them a few places for those hunger pains.  Errr, same as the candy corn Smile with tongue out  Gotta have the sweet-salty combo, ya know?

So tell me, what are your favorite snacky foods (healthy, indulgent, or otherwise)?

Have you had Popchips?  What’s your favorite flavor?

Labor day, but overworked mind

Happy Labor Day friends!

Let’s hope you all have the day off and are enjoying it to the fullest Open-mouthed smile

I have today off and also had Friday off (9-80 work week off-Friday), but my mind has been go-go-go!

Does that ever happen to you?  Where you just have a list a mile long of little things you want to tackle?  I’m a list person, so that’s been a big help, but I just feel like there are so many items to still check off… I don't know smilemeeep!

So let’s make like my brain and get a little scattered and random, mmmkay?

My cookies from the Amy and Jess’s Sweet Swap came courtesy of Heather at Mile 26 and More (check out the link to see what happened to the Oatmeal Butterscotch Chocolate Chip Cookies I sent her Confused smile).  She sent me M&M cookies (recipe form How Sweet).  I think she must have known I’ve been craving M&M cookies.  They were so good, so doughy, and so addictive!  I had to give the last 10 or so to my hubby to take golfing today so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat them as I stood at the counter.

Last week while in Denver, I came across Bobo Bars (made in Boulder).  I fell in love.  I bought more every day at the cafeteria.  I want them every day, they are that good.  They are dense, filling, oat-y with a bit of flavor, and many options.  Bummer is, that I just realized that they are TWO servings not one. FML.  That’s twice the calories I assumed.  Dangit.  But the PB is soooo worth it.  I’m thinking cinn-raisin is up next…

While running errands on Friday, I inadvertently picked up two bags of Halloween candy.  Oops.  Not sure how that happened, but boy am I glad it did.  I have a slight obsession with  candy corn this time of years and I also snagged some candy-corn-ish mallows (?).  Yeah, yum.  I’m sure my friend Tina would be pleased Winking smile

And since my mind is a cluttered mess that would put Hoarders to shame, let’s not worry about a smooth transition and just talk purses.

It’s time for me to transition to something new for the next month or two.  Help a girl out would ya?

  1. Coach cross-body purse – love that I don’t have to hold onto my purse, but it’s pretty small so that means I need to pare down my purse innards.
  2. Multicolor leaf doctor’s bag style purse (from boutique in Santa Cruz, CA) – I got this last year and just loved it.  It fits everything and screams “Fall is coming, Fall is coming!”
  3. Magenta floral hobo (from ShopSuey) – this purse can fit a kitchen sink and will keep Summer going just a little big longer.
  4. Brown envelope clutch (from Aldo) – I don’t get nearly enough use out of this cute little thing.  The inside is decently roomy (roomier than the Coach), but since it’s a clutch, that means it will never be hands free.

Alrighty, let’s get some discussion going…

Favorite Fall candy?  Candy corn all the way!  With Reeses PB minis (in Autumn foil colors Smile with tongue out) a close second

Have you had a Bobo bar?

And most importantly, which purse next?
