Pregnancy—another look (part 2)

The bestie’s pregnancy experience continued:

My third trimester was mostly filled with eating, extreme nesting, and planning for the big day.  I was really uncomfortable being so big (major heartburn, trouble sleeping, you know, the usual), but it was certainly not the torture the first trimester was, so I tried not to complain as much.

The nesting really kicked into hyper drive in the last month or so, as I ordered (er, convinced?) my husband to not only paint the nursery, but every room upstairs in our new house.  Luckily he’s a really great guy and only gives me a pat on the head and an "oh, kitten" when I ask for yet another redesign task.  Overall he’s been really really supportive throughout this whole experience.  And it has been an experience, medically as well as all the other "normal" pregnancy stuff.  Our first medical setback was a low-lying placenta diagnosed in the second trimester.  A low-lying placenta isn’t an immediate risk to baby, but if it doesn’t grow up and away from the cervix it turns into a placenta previa and causes a c-section delivery to be necessary.  There is also the *ahem* "pelvic rest" required for 2 months when a placenta is low-lying.  Let’s just say that was my husband’s least favorite part about my pregnancy.  Luckily after the 2 months my placenta had grown up and out of the way, and we were back on track with our natural birth plan.

About that natural birth plan… I have been afraid of giving birth almost my whole life, but after getting pregnant I for some reason became very attached to having a natural birth.  Perhaps I was just more afraid of getting a catheter in my back for the epidural, or of getting sliced into for a c-section, than having things happen naturally.  Or maybe it was hormones guiding my decisions.  Either way, I was on track to go natural and haven’t wavered in that desire throughout the pregnancy.  But I think rule #1 in pregnancy and childbirth is that you should expect things to go in an unexpected direction.  No pregnancy or birth is the same, and it’s really really hard to try to have any sort of plan.  Which brings me to our second medical setback.  At our second formal ultrasound they noticed my amniotic fluid was low.  It’s not a huge problem to have low fluid levels in the second trimester, as long as they’re not actively decreasing, so they had me come back in for a re-check a week later to make sure the level was stable.  In that week I read that the cause of low fluid levels isn’t known, but they think dehydration can be a contributing factor.  So I spent the week drinking water like it was my job, determined to get my fluid levels back up.  But no dice.  Fluid level at the next ultrasound was the same, so at least for me dehydration was not a factor.  However the fluid level wasn’t dangerously low and wasn’t decreasing, so it was something of note, but no danger to baby for now.

As it turns out, amniotic fluid levels actually naturally decrease in the third trimester as you approach your due date.  Unfortunately for us, our little Tater Tot (his name is Tate) really liked to use my stomach as a pillow and was unable (or unwilling) to flip into a head-down position prior to the fluid levels getting so low that he couldn’t flip if he wanted to.  So at my 36 week check-up my OB and the ultrasound tech said that the levels were too low both for him to be flipped manually (an external version) or for him to flip on his own, and that we’d have to schedule a c-section.  Additionally, my amniotic fluid levels were approaching the danger level, meaning we may need an immediate c-section if they drop again soon.  So not only was I left to grapple with the loss of my natural birth plan and being sliced into (not excited about that), but I was most likely also not going to get the predictability of a scheduled c-section.  My brain kept screaming "What the HECK!" as the gravity of the situation sank in.  But I tried to focus on the positive.  I’d be getting my kiddo earlier than I thought (which I’m really happy about), and all the inconveniences could be handled.  I went back to work after the appt. and wrapped up all my projects the best I could, letting everyone know that I’m still here but I could be gone tomorrow so they should plan accordingly.  Even my mom has said she has a bag packed waiting by the door so she can fly out at a moments notice (from the west coast!  I have to coolest mom ever).  So it’s not the end of the world.  So long as the baby is healthy, I will consider this adventure a success story.  But it has been an adventure!!  The only thing common from pregnancy to pregnancy and birth to birth is that no two are the same.  That’s what makes life great though, right?

That’s all for now.  I’ll update you all on the end of our tale when it plays out in the next few weeks.  And I promise the dramatic conclusion will come with cute baby pics.

Thanks bestie – wish more than anything I could be there with you and for you!  I cannot wait to see you in May and meet the lil tator tot and have our boys be future friends forever Smile

33 weeks preggers update

Good morning!

Thank you for your supportive comments yesterday on my eating binge on Monday Winking smile

As I mentioned yesterday, I had my 33 week appointment this week.  It was supposed to be 32 weeks, but apparently the appointment desk can’t count Smile with tongue out

Let’s revisit the “By the numbers”:

  • Weeks into pregnancy: 33 weeks at appt (33.5 weeks today)
  • Days to go: 45 days (as of today)
  • Work days until maternity leave: 9 work days!!!
  • Pounds gained: 20.7 lbs (up 4.2 lbs from 5 weeks ago) (average weight gain is between 22 and 28 pounds at this point)
  • Current waist size (measured at belly button): 37 inches (increase of 1.5” since 5 weeks ago)
  • Uterus size (outside measurement on stomach called “fundal length)):  31 cm (up 5 cm from 5 weeks ago –> hello growth spurt!)
  • Baby weight: ~4lbs per my doctor’s estimate (average is 4.4 lb according to WebMD)
  • Baby position: Head down!  Woohoo!  His lil booty is hanging out on my right side and he’s in a U-shape with his legs and (kicking) feet on the left side
  • Baby length: 19.4 inches head-to-toe  (according to WebMD)
  • Kick Count Card: started at 28 weeks (Oct 3rd) – 10 baby movements are occurring in about 10 minutes (20 minutes tops).  He moves so much at times it makes me nauseous.  And I’m pretty sure he’s bruised my right rib.
  • Weeks until next ultrasound: <3 weeks!

Overall, I’m feeling pretty great!  My energy is still pretty high, relatively speaking Winking smile  I’m starting to really love (like, looooove) my sleep.  Mentally I’m unbelievably excited and feel like I’m ‘ready’ for the most part, though I want to also revel in these last weeks with Sawyer inside my belly.

You may remember that in my last update, I talked about considering a c-section.  I still am not 100% decided, but I am about 80-90% sure I want a natural birth. And when I say natural, I mean lots and lot of drugs.  I kid, I kid.  Just give me the epidural, please!

So that’s where I’m at!

What are you counting down the days to?

28+ Week Update: weight, kick count, and c-sections

Welcome back from the weekend!  Did you survive?

Our weekend was high on productivity and low on unabashed fun.  But I feel good about it.

Friday night our plans to have dinner at a new pizza place were thwarted by a rehearsal dinner. Boo – hissssss Disappointed smile  And then the fancy futon we wanted for the baby’s room couldn’t be picked up.  We need a week for it to be delivered.

Saturday we headed to Buy Buy Baby to pick up the crib, diaper changing station, and crib mattress we had received as gifts from our registry.  Let’s just say it took, oh, a good hour to figure out how we were going to strap the crib box to Zach’s car since it wouldn’t fit inside. Oye.  What an adventure!

But we did have some fun in BBB:

The remainder of the day was spent tackling the beast that is putting furniture together.

I’ll definitely do all an-up post on the Nursery progress, but not today Winking smile

But let’s back up for a second.  Friday morning I had my 28 week check up (28 weeks and 4 days actually).  I told Zach he didn’t have to go to this one since we weren’t having an ultrasound.  But it ended up being a super informative appointment with just me and the doc (whom I adore btw).

Let’s revisit the “By the numbers”:
(Compare to 24.5 weeks here)

  • Weeks into pregnancy: 28.5 weeks at appt (29 weeks today!)
  • Days to go: 77 days  (as of today) <—MEEP!
  • Pounds gained: 16.5 lbs (average weight gain is between 17 and 24 pounds at this point)
  • Current waist size (measured at belly button): 35.5 inches
  • Uterus size (weird I know – outside measurement on stomach called “fundal length)):  26 cm
  • Glucola test (for diabetes): Negative!  Wahoo!  As you recall, I fainted right after my blood was drawn.  Well apparently my sugar level was the lowest my doctor has ever seen in a pregnant woman! Surprised smile  Above 175 mg/dL is at risk (enough to have to take the 3 hour test).  Below 70 mg/dL is the super low range where people have extreme reactions.  I was at 50 mg /dL.  Bottom line, when I say I need food, I need food.  Rawr!
  • Ta-ta size increase: 1++ cup size (no change since 24.5 weeks)
  • Baby weight: ~2.5 lb (according to WebMD)
  • Baby length: 16 inches head-to-toe  (according to What to Expect website)
  • Kick Count Card: started at 28 weeks (Oct 3rd) – 10 baby movements are occurring in about 10 minutes (20 minutes tops).  He’s a wiggly one! Open-mouthed smile
  • Flu shot: Zero.  I do not plan on getting one.  I have never in my life received a flu shot and the last time I actually caught the flu, I was still in the single digits.  Yes, I’m aware that the shot also has H1N1, but I was in Mexico when H1N1 broke out and didn’t get sick.  Am I delusional that I’m immune?  Nope, but I don’t feel it’s right for me or my baby to start getting the flu shot now. (My doctor completely supports me and agrees with my approach)
  • Weeks until next ultrasound: 7 weeks!  Too long to see my lil one again!

One thing I have not yet shared is my birth plan.  While there are many, many aspects to the plan, the big gigantic elephant in the nursery is whether or not I’ll have a c-section.

While my doctor does do elective c-sections (though not recommended), there is a medical concern for me based on my plummeting blood pressure (and fainting) after medical procedures.

Ideally, I agree that a vaginal birth is best / preferred, but I also need to do what’s best for my health as well.  That being said, I’ve been exploring the option of a c-section.

And you know what?

There really isn’t a lot of information out there.  Books do not abound, nor do classes.

So I’m sort of stuck.

Readers, friend of readers, pregnancy blog followers, help!

  • If you’ve had a c-section, please share your experience.
  • How was the recovery different if you’ve had both a regular birth and a c-section?
  • What are the pros / cons of c-sections

And to the rest of my readers:

Does a productive weekend make you happy?

What’s one thing you did this weekend that put a big ol’ smile on your face? Open-mouthed smile
