Why I don’t fit in

Hey there,

Thank you to the readers, friends, blog supporters who want to continue to see me blog…err or just see pics of Bean.  Either way, all the comments did make me smile and the support is one of the reasons to continue blogging.

Mila had the idea of just blogging 1x per week on average.  I like that and may be something I’ll stick to.  My guess is, per month, there will be one random ‘here’s what I’ve been up to’ post, 1 post on Bean’s latest news, 1 post on shoes (since I’ve yet to show you about 3 or 4 new pairs I’ve bought), and 1 post may be on a new recipe I’ve tried.  How does that sound?

In the last post, I alluded to not fitting in the HLB community.  First let me say, I actually do believe myself to live healthfully: I sleep 8-9 hours a night, I work out regularly, I eat well, I indulge for special occasions (or for Tuesdays ;) ), I try to take me time, I spend time with family and friends, I travel, I challenge my brain.  All of those things, to me, make up a healthy lifestyle.

And there a good number of other HLBers who also live and believe similarly (from what I can tell).

But that’s just it, it’s only from what I can tell.  What is portrayed, whether true or not, is not what I can relate to.   So as to not be cryptic, I’m going to list them, but please know that this is not a personal attack by any means.  It’s just me noting we may not subscribe to the same approach to healthy living.

Why I don’t fit in:

  • I hate working out in the AM’s and would never (unless for some spectacular reason) sacrifice my sleep to go workout.  Instead I work out after work (late afternoons) when I can burn off energy.
  • I think almond butter is not all its hyped up to be.  Give me PB.  In fact, place a container of JIF in front of me, and I’ll be pretty damn happy.
  • I won’t preach about HFCS and then eat a massive amount of froyo topped with candy toppings that include HFCS. Instead, I’ll just do the latter…and enjoy it :P
  • I won’t overlink to my old pages for hits.  For awhile I got way to caught up in the reader traffic.  What does it all mean?  Nada.  I don’t blog for my job so it’s not like I’m dependent on hits for money.
  • I won’t overlink to products.  I will link to the few products that I truly love (e.g. Nugo before Nugos were popular) to give you easy access to the site or to a restaurant menu that I don’t want to recap.
  • I will not market myself for tons of free stuff.  I admit, it’s awesome to be sent items to review especially when the retailer sought you out.  But whether direct or indirect, there is an amount of work that goes into getting that free stuff: links to their site, commenting on other people’s blogs about how much you love that product, soliciting them directly, tweeting them day in and day out, etc.  I could spend that time with my baby or doing extra work at my job, that pays me, and then just buy those things the companies are sending.  Right?
  • I don’t subscribe to the crazy toppings trend.  That is, when I eat oatmeal, it’s just water, oats, and some cinn (maybe some stevia), but no muffin crumbles or granola or PB or AB.  Just oats.  Same for my toast — it’s just PB on it, not PB with nectarine slices and granola on top.  A few posts back I wrote about my sugar intake…well all those toppings are a sure fire way to have the sugar intake explode!
  • I won’t ever post all my food.  I eat oatmeal every morning with brewed coffee.  I eat a relatively boring lunch and dinners aren’t that extravagant either.  If anything is worthy noting, sure I may mention it.  I assure you, my oats are not worth noting.
  • I drink wine, usually a glass a night.  I am surprised by how many HLBers rarely if ever drink/have a glass of vino with dinner, etc.
  • I’m not always happy.  I get down.  I get frustrated.  I get cranky.  You get the point.  I tell you that I’m in a funk and don’t or won’t put on a happy face.  I think readers are getting a skewed perception of what bloggers’ lives are like based on what they portray.  I’m glad others are happy, but I find it hard to believe that there is never a bad day worth a few sentences of ranting.
  • I don’t run.  That’s a biggie.  Okay, it’s also somewhat of a lie.  I run to get in a workout now and then (maybe 2-3x per month tops).  And my run is maybe 3 miles.  And it’s at a 9 min pace.  And I feel like death afterwards.  And that’s a-ok by me.  I feel mighty left out at blog events that focus solely on running.
  • I cannot devote even up to an hour of working out a day.  I have a job.  I have a baby.  And sadly I require at least 8 hours of sleep so using more than about 45 minutes of my day to workout is not really negotiable to me (minus my weekly Spin class or an occasional Bikram, etc).  Frankly, I like to get my workout done, then grab my glass of vino and watch bad reality tv.

Phew…okay that list got too long.

So the blogs I do relate too are the ones that share real aspects of their life, don’t call a 60min workout an easy day, generally have a job of some sort, are mommies (hey what can I say, I can relate), don’t use the same words as every other blogger, and aren’t caught up in all of the above.  Caveat: some bloggers I follow, and truly like, do some of the things above, but also have shared so much more that I can relate to.

So there it is.

See ya in a week or so maybe ;)

Something on my mind…

Hello friends!

Loved your ideas for PB combos in yesterday’s post – I’m thinking PB with cottage cheese is the most unique and I’m all about it giving a whirl!

Isn’t it an amazing feeling knowing the weekend is just right around the corner?  I love having a 4 day workweek.  Who wants to start a petition to get this to be a regular thing?

So ever since the Healthy Living Summit, something has been weighing on my mind.  It’s always kind of been there, but I felt HLS just brought it to light.

I should warn you that this post is not going to be the best composed.  These thoughts have been fluttering in my brain, but I’ve yet to find a cohesive way to say it.  I have however thought of random titles:

Mean Girls, Fall from Grace, (Too) High Expectations, Expect the Unexpected, Let-downs happen

There has been plenty of talk in the blog world about how we portray only what we want others to see.  We often show them the best, only (mostly) the positive, and photos of ourselves smiling and jubilant.  Attached with that portrayal is an expectation that that is the way you will be in real life

I am happy to say that 99% of the bloggers I met at HLS were exactly what they seemed like on their blog – and in some cases even more amazing! Then there were the few who I had expected would say hello, have a big smile on their face (versus a sneer when I looked their way), or at least be polite when you were standing next to them in line.

Sadly, I was let down.

A couple bloggers who I’ve been following since shortly after I started blogging (in May 2010) were not as they seemed.  Oddly enough all the times I read their blogs, I felt something was slightly inauthentic, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.  I guess intuition speaks volumes.

The thing is, I don’t know why this bothered (*is bothering*) me so much.  Maybe it’s because I see other readers / bloggers hold some of these ladies in such high esteem, which doesn’t seem to be consistent with the side I saw of them.  Maybe it’s because I simply wanted be expectations to be met.  Maybe it’s because I noticed a twinge of that “mean girl” personality, for which I’ll always hate.

And obviously this doesn’t just happen in the blog world, it happens in real life.  Maybe a good friend or a family member raves about some third party, only to meet them and they give you the cold shoulder or have no interest in being friendly.

The question is…what do you do about it

  • Do you contact them personally and try to find out if your impressions were correct?
  • Do you ignore and move on?
  • Do you persist and give them the benefit of the doubt?
  • Do you stew and do nothing?

In regards to the bloggers, I stopped reading one of the blogs and on another, I stopped commenting, but may stop reading all together.

What are your thoughts?

Has this happened to you?

For those that attended HLS, did you experience any of the above?

Philly and HLS Part 1

I’m baaaaack!

And it feels good to be home, seeing the hubby, the pets, and getting back in my routine.  I think this preggers girl is just about done with traveling.  One more trip to Denver in a week and then I think I’m not going to be on planes for until after Baby O is born (insert happy dance here).

Philly and the Healthy Living Summit was a whirlwind.  It was wonderful, enlightening, and exhausting all in one.  I’ll be breaking up the recap over 2 days just so not to overwhelm Winking smile

Travel to Philly was pretty good minus the horrible shuttle driver I had from PHL to the downtown Marriott – somehow I landed at 10p and didn’t get to the hotel until 12a.  FAIL!

But after a good night’s rest, I met up with one of my best college buds from Northwestern U –> Qamara!

014

(If we look a little worse for the wear it’s because we already trekked a few miles around in the humidity…next time remember, photo first!)

Our first stop was Reading Terminal, which reminded me a bit like Pike Place Market in Seattle full of delicious eats, homecrafted goods, and restaurants sprinkled throughout.  LOVE places like these!  It would also be the sight of our HLS cocktail party that evening!

Q chose for us to have breakfast at Down Home Dining.  And as much as I love my pancakes, I knew that oatmeal would be the most sustaining:

After breakfast we walked around Reading so I could drool some more:

I had to buy a cookie from 1st Street Bakery – I chose an oatmeal raisin and while tasty, it was a bit heavy on the buttah flavor, which isn’t really my thang.  Oh well.

Next up, we tried to see the Liberty Bell, but the line was annoyingly long so I just snapped a photo from afar along with some other Philly sites:

After some more walking, a stop at Dunkin Donuts for an iced latte (Smile with tongue out) and a walk through Macy’s, it was time to meet my roomie Jillian from Sprinkle Massacre and quickly head to lunch with a some other HLSers.

The destination was Govinda’s Vegetarian – our group of nearly 30 (?) overwhelmed the tiny place, but to get a veggie Philly cheesesteak sandwich was worth it!

After trekking back, Jillian and I spent a couple hours resting and chatting before our cocktail party.

All gussied up Winking smile

And some new friends!

Laury from The Fitness Dish (I stole her photo).  She’s so easy to talk to – I wanted more time!

Lisa from I’m an Oakie – this girl has an awesome infectious personality!

And from our photobooth fun, CJ, and Janeetha from Meals and Moves – this girl is beyond real.  Love when people are what they show on their blogs!

I met so many other awesome girls, but didn’t take a lot of photos.  I was too busy having fun Smile

First day Philly & HLS impressions:

  • Philly is a great city – love that you can walk so many places
  • Reading Terminal would be my haven if I lived there
  • It’s never too late (read: 10 yrs) to catch up with old college friends
  • I lucked out with a  great roomie in Jillian
  • It is hard work to coordinate 200+ bloggers for a cocktail party
  • I’m glad I wasn’t super hungry Friday night because the apps were lacking a bit Confused smile
  • You don’t need alcohol to have fun, but a photobooth sure helps get ya silly!

Phew!  Long post!

Any favorite moments from Day 1 of HLS?

Or best moment of your weekend whatever you did?

What city do you want to see HLS in next?  I say Denver or San Francisco!
