I don’t have a Tuesday Shoes-Day post for you, but I did just get a new pair of shoes in the mail today and bought a cute new pair of sandals on Sunday. I’ll show them both soon ![]()
And yes it’s technically Tuesday, but I’m going to post my What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW) a lil’ early if that’s okay.
But before I do that, I want to mention that I have successfully completed two days (out of the 8 weeks) of Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp (BBB) and I’m lovin’ it. I’m not overly sore (thanks to all those personal training sessions) and the exercises are not ones I typically do so I’m entertained. We’ve hit both the upper body and lower body and Wednesday is all about the core, to which I say bring it on. I love working my abs.
Alright, back to WIAW – as I noted last week, I am trying to reduce my overall sugar intake, which requires revamping my eats just a bit.
I’ve been desperate to find protein bars with a smaller sugar count. How could I forget NuGo Slims? They were kind enough to send me some about a year ago and I revisited the stats and am so pleased:
The brownie flavor is my fave with the roasted peanut a close second. And they’re sold through Soap.com — partner company with Diapers.com — so they are super easy for me to get with the ridiculous amount of things I purchase from the latter. You can also get them at Whole Foods.
Another option is the Promax Lower Sugar bars. They have 9g opposed to the typical 20g (?). Given the choice between the two, I’d go with the NuGo though.
Earth Balance coconut & peanut spread: wow! This stuff is good. If you’re coconut lover, then you will surely appreciate the subtle coconut goodness that is in this mild, smooth PB. It’s delish. Pricey, but delish. I even hooked a friend on it…sorry Jennifer! ![]()
SO Delicious coconut milk. Again, in my quest for lowering my sugar intake, I’ve been exploring other milks. This coconut milk is awesome. Again, fabulous mild flavor and only 45 cals in 1 cup! Oh and 1g of sugar per serving. Not too shabby.
Finally, Trader Joe’s Greek Style 2% plain yogurt. More great stats (1 cup): 160 cals, 5g sugar, 24g (!!!) protein. This is super thick and creamy. Yum!
A typical day of lower sugar meals:
- Breakfast: Brewed coffee with 1 tbsp sugar free creamer (<—not healthy, but not giving it up!), 1/2 cup old fashioned oats with about 50 cal scoop of vanilla protein powder, and a dash of cinnamon
- Lunch: Lentil quesadilla using TJ’s precooked lentils, a La Tortilla Factory low carb tortilla with sharp cheddar shredded cheese (<1/4 cup) and topped with a hefty serving of spicy salsa
- Snack: 1 cup TJ’s Greek style yogurt with 1/4 cup fresh blueberries and more cinnamon
- Snack (2): ~16 almonds
- Dinner: Homemade soup (white chili chicken was a great one that my MIL made..yummm)
- Bonus: 1 glass red wine

Stats (rough estimate) = ~1400-1500, protein ~80g, sugar ~18g
Okay, your turn, what lower sugar foods are you loving?
Are you participating in the BBB?
I am loving cottage cheese as a low sugar night snack options. I was hooked on yogurt but traded it for a bit healthier option before bedtime.
I love cottage cheese too. I like mixing it with fruit or a whole grain cracker (for dipping)
I also switched from greek yogurt to cottage cheese, and eat it with fresh blueberries. But it’s about the same as TJ’s greek yogurt that S found, nutrition-wise, so I think I’ll switch between the two now and then.
Yeah and for some reason I tend to think more savory with cottage cheese so I feel like my options are limited, but at least it’s a great second option. And usually cheap too!
I’ve been trying to eat less added sugar too. It’s amazing how much sugar is in everything! I’ve nixed many bars bec of it too and taken to plain Greek yogurt instead of flavored. It’s amazing how much it stops a sweet tooth to not have so much sugar, though.
And WOO for loving boot camp so far. I’m glad I can entertain (and work!) you.
I know! Sugar is everywhere. I’ve had to nix my favorite Chobanis because of the sugar. I’ll probably bring them back once I can get things in control, but for now, they have to step aside.
I LOVE the bootcamp. You are amazing for doing this!
Dang shana you have amazing self control! Your daily menu is approximately what I consume before lunch these days!!! I discovered the earth balance PB a few months ago and am in LOVE!! Any sugar withdrawal symptoms?? I’m thinking of lowering my sugar intake but I’ve been “thinking” about it for months now
I fear I’ll turn into a serious cranky pants!!
If you can eat that before lunch and still be so trim, I am in serious ENVY!
The first couple days I cut back my sugar were *rough*. I was a total crankypants, irritable, and felt dizzy. Oh and the headaches. Ugh. But now I’m doing good. I don’t really notice and I feel better. Though I crave going to town on a handful of chocolate chips in a peanut butter jar. Mmmmmm
I need to work on my sugar consumption as well. I don’t eat lots of sweet foods (other than fruit), but it’s amazing how much sugar you consume even when you think you’re doing well… I started the Best Body Bootcamp this week as well and I’m loving it! Nice to visit your blog and I look forward to coming back in the future! Have a great day!
Tallying up my sugars really was a wake up call. I don’t plan to eliminate, but certainly reduce them and be more mindful.
Thanks for stopping by! And good luck with the bootcamp
The coconut milk, coconut peanut butter and yogurt are literally three of my most used foods in my pantry/fridge right now. I like promax bars a lot but sometimes they sit in my stomach like rocks and it makes it hard to run after eating them.
Great minds think alike Hollie
I noticed you had Chobani on today’s post which is higher in sugar…how does that work with your diabetes? Is it okay since it’s mostly lactose?
Have you tried the lower sugar promax — they do seem ‘lighter’
HI Shanna, I’m from Bootcamp too;) Love your ‘bonus’ glass of wine. I’m going to try the TJ’s 2% yogurt and I almost forgot about my favorite yogurt, Siggis Icelandic ….I know it is lower in sugar but I can’t remember how low. It’s also loaded with protein, something like 14g. At $2 a serving it’s a tad pricy but worth it for me. Great job on your workouts!
Where can I find Siggis?
I think you’ll like TJ’s..the price is also a little higher than I’d like, but like you said worth it!
Good luck to you as well Amy
Whole Foods has it. I even saw it in Safeway but not with the regular yogurts, it was in the small organic cooler section. The Orange Ginger flavor is amazing. It is a bit tart (only sweetened with agave) but THICK and really rich. I recommended it to a friend and she hated it…lol..but she doesn’t eat as ‘clean’ as I try to. She is
more of a Yoplait gal;)
I’ll check them both — thanks Amy!
Good for you!!! Cutting back on sugar is difficult…well, at least for me.
I just started the 17 Day Diet 3 days ago after seeing a friend (who did not need to lose weight) and she looked amazing! Its all about lean meats, low-sugar fruits, and limiting your sugar intake…and lots of green tea and water. I’m CRAVING sugars and carbs but I haven’t ‘cracked’…yet.
Way to go! The first few days are definitely the roughest, but now I only have mild cravings and it’s usually because I’m bored or anxious. Good luck
Thanks for sharing all of these lower sugar meal ideas! I’ve had the worst sweet tooth since having Wyatt and I cannot seem to get rid of it, grrr.
I know! me too..it started in pregnancy for me though!
I made a completely sugarless banana bread on the weekend that actually turned out really well. Sadly, I made it after a few too many glasses of wine, so I couldn’t tell you what was in it.
GAH! You’ll just have to make it again Leah
I never liked coconut until more recently!
okay, you really need to answer this question for me!!! Where did you get that earth balance coconutpeanut spread??? wholefoods? I am from Austria, but my boyfriend is flying to NYC next week so he has to go to whole foods (or whereever he can get that earthbalance spread!) and buy some for me hahaha. Pleasseeeeeeeeeeeeeee tell me
xx
YES! You can get it at whole foods. They have creamy and crunchy. I did creamy this time around, but plan on cruncy next. Hope he finds it!
Ohhh I wanna try those NuGo bars! They sound tasty!
Definitely go get some — they feel so guilt free!
I am in LOVE with the Earth Balance peanut coconut spread! I’m visiting my mom right now, and got her hooked too. I think it might be the best discovery I’ve made in months. (And compared to many other nut butters, it’s reasonably priced. Win!).
I’ve been eating Paleo-ish for the past two weeks (with the exception of occasional froyo here and there, of course), which means no added sugar. I’ve been loading my plate with fruits (natural sugars are nothing to worry about!) veggies, nuts, lean meats etc., and I’ve never felt better. My favorite low sugar snack is homemade pumpkin-coconut protein bars! They’re sweetened with stevia and contain 70 calories, pack almost 10 g. protein and almost 4 g. fiber. I take them everywhere!
I’m so intrigued Sara — I love pretty much anything pumpkin. I’ll have to check your page for the recipe. I’m drooling just thinking about them.
Oh and yes that Earth Balance coconut PB is so freakin’ amazing. Love love love it!
Truth: I’ve never paid attention to how much sugar is in stuff. Is that bad? I’m not much of a sugar fiend so I’m not too worried about it
That coconut peanut butter spread looks awesome!
