Right now I’m off to my 36 week check up. Pretty routine except this time we get an ultrasound and also a Strep B test (lovely). I’m more concerned over the dreaded scale. Meep! I’ll recap everything tomorrow ![]()
Let’s get to WIAW, courtesy of Jenn at Peas and Crayons.
Now that I’m on maternity leave, I need to make sure I’m sticking to a similar eating routine as when I’m working full time. During the work weeks I’ve always been incredibly disciplined and it’s the weekends when I go crazy. And by crazy I mean, I pretty much double my daily calorie intake if not more.
Since every day is almost like a weekend day, I cannot allow myself to eat as if each day was Saturday. So I’ve been trying to incorporate the same eating habits I had at work as when I’m off.
It’s definitely been tough since I’m now tempted by everything in my pantry and fridge all day long. I also blame Thanksgiving for super sizing my stomach, because now I’m always hungry. Argh.
Here’s a snapshot of what I’ve been eating:
Oats oats oats. Love ‘em. I usually do 1 packet TJ’s cinnamon raisin with 1/4 cup rolled oats, dash of extra cinn, and 1-2 tsp brown sugar. Yum! Paired with coffee of course!
Protein shake (with a cat sticking it’s tongue out at me). This one included 1 large banana, 3/4 cup TJ’s chocolate almond milk, 1/2 cup water, scoop vanilla protein, 1 heaping tsp PB2, and 1/2 tsp xantham gum. Delish.
Snackage that comes with a begging dog. Roasted lightly salted almonds, craisins, and raisins. Too bad the hubby thinks this is good too because now I have to share.

Meal time has been fairly quick and easy, thus the repeat of tired girl’s jambalaya. It’s easy and protein and veggie packed. Perfect.
So it’s definitely evident I’m not getting nearly enough extra fruits, veggies, and protein for that matter. It’s just so hard when you’re trying to not exceed a calorie count (accounting for baby of course!!!).
Are you able to keep a good eating routine even when your life has no ‘schedule’? If so, how?
Any must add-ins in your oatmeal?
I have no routines when I’m off work – I snack all day long!
on weekends i usually have no eating schedule…it goes heavy breakfast/lunch around 12…light dinner at 7. or light breakfast at 11 heavy dinner around 7!
GAH! How do you go so many hours without eating? I’d eat my left arm…followed by my right!
Oh man! I have such a hard time with eating when I’m at home. Even when I’m working from home. The pantry is just too tempting! Hang in there bestie.
So far so good, but I haven’t been too bored yet…;)
don’t worry about the scale. you’re in the final stretch- the more the better! save your dreading for after!
I’m kind of the opposite of you when it comes to eating. At work I sit all day and it makes me think more about food, and everyone’s baked goods everyday don’t help so much. so I’m always waaaay more hungry and eat more than when i have an off Friday and i’m running around doing things.
Also, I think it’s you that mentioned it before and I totally agree that I love oats and I love PB but I can’t eat them together! My mouth gets all dry and sticky, the textures are too similar, I need more variety in my oats
Really? I’m pretty good at resisting baked goodies at work. And since I only pack what I will eat I’m not tempted to get anything more. But at home, my whole kitchen is at my fingertips!
it’s easy to say no to donuts, but homemade treats, especially around the holidays, are my weakness!
My eating habits are a well-oiled machine. If I’m not fed by my normal hours, I get suuuuper bitchy. It’s not good for anyone.
Hey Shanna, don’t worry about the scale! You’ve been in a normal (if not on the lower side) of weight gain during your entire pregnancy. You have one week until full term, things aren’t changing now! Plus, I think a lot of what you gain at the end is fluid and actual BABY! Plus the baby is experiencing it’s biggest brain growth around this time and needs the extra energy. The baby can gain up to a pound a week at this point! As far as calories, I wouldn’t worry about adding in some fresh fruit. Maybe trade in the dried fruit for some fresh stuff. It’s less calorie dense and very nutritious! Either way, don’t stress!
Thanks Jamie – it helps hearing that from someone who is also going through this. I waver between freaking out and then thinking that really what’s a few more lbs right?
I’m the same with eating more on the weekends. If I’m just sitting in my apartment all day I will end up raiding my fridge. Also, if there is a bag of Stacy’s pita chips I will eat half the bag in one sitting, lol. Need to stop buying those…
I have to try and keep in good eating when I go home for break. I’ll be chilling at home doing nothing for 8 hours god knows I must keep planned. HA
I so relate to you on this and we’ve talked about it before – I go super crazy on the weekends too and most definitely double my calorie intake, lol! I know if I were home I too would have to be careful about not treating it like a Saturday everyday – I’m always tempted to dip my hand in the cereal box or peanut butter jar!
And I love your addition of adding a 1/4 cup of reg. oats to your TJ’s packet – I always think those packets don’t have quite enough – a lil more please!!
In NY my MIL had the best frozen blueberries and I added them to my oatmeal – it was delish – the combo of frozen berries and hot oatmeal is fabulous!
I do love me some blueberries, and getting frozen ones are a great idea and so much cheaper — your MIL is smart
Yes that dang cereal box too…meeep!
Oddly enough Im the opposite. When I’m at work I tend to eat more than when I have time off. I think it has to do with the fact that I cant pay attention to anything for more than 30 seconds without needed some type of distraction.
I used to be that way when I studied — I snacked constantly!
You have nothing to worry about with your weight gain! You haven’t gained much so far so I don’t think you’ll end up gaining a lot more before the baby is here! Did you notice a big weight gain in the third trimester? I’m shooting to gain between 25-30lbs and am slightly worried about gaining a lot these last ten weeks. I’ve had a few people tell me thrid tri is when you gain the most and grow a ton! Any truth?
I work from home a lot during the day but I usually am great at sticking with a routine eating plan Monday – Thursday. On the weekends I tend to eat a lot more than I would during the week but typcially only at our dinner meal. I try to keep things as consistent as I can and keep my foods the same so I know what to eat when to keep my full while also getting the baby lots of nutrients! Also making sure to have healthy foods on hand makes sticking with healthy eating a lot more easy.
Oh, and your mixed fruit and almonds looks good! I think I’m going to make my own baggie! Yum!
YES! I totally gained the most in the 3rd tri :-/ I gained about 8.5 lbs in the 3rd tri so far…oye..good thing it’s almost over! But apparently the weight gain from now on should be pretty small. I’m with you on the no more than 30 lbs
I think we’re both on track to be under
Ughh, I have been home from work for a few days (and not blogged either) because I am sick, and it is even harder for me to keep a routine. Especially after the holidays, I am stuck on eating pie and cookies and I crave it from breakfast until dinner. Being home with no schedule makes it difficult for me to stay on track! It’s a shame, I’m home with all the time in the world and I can’t go to the gym, eat healthy, cook, or blog!
PS. Be on the lookout this week for a package!
Oh no, poor girl
I’m sorry you’re sick! Did you get what Joe had?
I *always* eat a ton when I’m sick. It’s the only thing that makes me feel better
A package??? I’m intrigued
I am unable to stick to any kind of food schedule if I break my normal routine in any way read: vacation, weekends, drinking etc. This is probably why I gained 6 pounds over last week
Ahh, but that was a holiday weekend so that doesn’t count. Consider it surface weight (meaning it’s easy to get off….)
Great point! I never thought about it that way
I am the same way! During the work week I’ve got a schedule, then blam the weekend shows up and my eating is all overbite place. Must be the freedom
Hope your appointment goes well!
Thanks Heather, it did!
Veggies don’t add to your calorie count! Try to have them with every meal, especially spinach/kale and broccoli, which are so easy to steam. It’s hard to eat “light” protein, but try adding beans. Also, I absolutely have to have nut butter in my oats!!!
Good call on the broc!
I LOVE PB but not in my oats…they must stay separate
When I have too much to do, I stress-eat with carbs. When I have no schedule, I still reach for carbs. I need unstressful structure to make me eat my veggies and lean protein.
As for oats, I throw in berries, pears, protein, walnuts, or other goodness. Oddly enough, I hate peanut butter in my oats, even though I looooooove peanut butter.
Girl me too…PB does not belong in oats
Maternity leave!! Your little boy will be here soon!!!
lol I love how the pets came to play in half your photos
so cute!
I have the exact same problem when I’m home on the weekends! Meal structure is thrown out the window, and I snack, snack, snack all day long. :-p In a way, the balance is nice though. I appreciate evenly spaced eating more during the week, but love the freedom to eat whatever, whenever, on Saturday and Sunday.
I hope the appointment went well today! You’re doing fab! xoxo
The jambalaya looks delicious! Great busy week night meal idea!
