Baby name(s)

Happy Monday friends!  My 3 day weekend rejuvenated me and I’m ready to tackle this week ahead.  And what’s more was that there was 3 fabulous things that happened this weekend:

  1. I met Shayla from The Good Life for lunch at Pluto’s in Palo Alto followed by Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks.  This girl is awesome, amazing, faboosh, and gorgeous!  Seriously!  I think had I not had errands that had to be run, we easily could have talked past our 3 hour meet-up.  I meant to bring my camera but didn’t even think once about taking a photo, which I’m bummed about –> guess we have to meet up again, Shayla Winking smile
  2. I went to my friend Alice’s Baby Shower – she is due Nov 26 (Thanksgiving weekend!), and a beyond lovely shower hosted at her MIL’s.  It was nicer than some weddings I’ve been to!  I’ll try to sneak some photos on the blog later this week for sure!
  3. Our friends Mojan and Ali had us over for authentic Persian food Saturday night.  I’m going to hold off on a recap here, since this should make a great WIAW!  Let’s just say it was go-od! Open-mouthed smile

Okay, moving on to the topic of the day: Baby names.

Oye!  Either this is a headache / argument / nightmare or it’s easy as pie since you’ve had the name in mind since you were playing with your dolls as a wee little one.

We fell in the middle actually.  We had started thinking about names well before we knew the gender and I was convinced we had  a solid boy’s name.  It was a girl that would be trouble, but just a week before the 18 week ultrasound, our girl’s name came to us: Adeline Grace.  I loved it.  Still love it!  Addy for short.  Perfection!

Until we saw this:

(You thought I was going to show you the goods again, didn’t ya? Winking smile)

It’s a boy!  Err okay so we’ll just go with the name I have loved, right?  Wrong.  Apparently Zach had some hang-ups about possible nicknames which he didn’t like.  Argh.  Okay, so we’ll brainstorm, right?  Easier said than done.

About a month ago, I threw another name into the mix, which the hubby loved. Loved loved loved.  But still he wanted to do ‘research’ – what does that mean?

We decided to peruse some baby name books a few weeks back on a Saturday and actually learned a lot!

  • Did you know that there are baby books that tell you all the ways to make fun of your baby name?  I loved looking through these.  You’ll be happy to know my name was not in that book (guess they missed the ‘Shanna Banana fee fi fo fanna, SHA-NNA’ jingle).
  • Max is the number 1 name in America….for a dog.
  • We came across a number of names for our next dog – Thurman tops the list (even if it’s a girl – ha).
  • They have a great book polling people’s inputs on initial reactions to baby names.  For instance, we loved the name Jaxson (Jax for short), but apparently people first think of this name as a gentle older black man.  Hmm, that won’t work.

That’s just some of what we learned Winking smile

Okay so let’s go over some names we did not choose…

Max – see above.  It’s a dog’s name apparently.  Sigh.

Leo – what is his full name?  Leopold?  Leonardo?  Too complicated.

Jaxson – again, see above.  Sad to see this one go, but apparently it’s getting really popular.

And finally… the name that I loved that we’re not naming Baby Boy O:

Liam – my heart breaks a little.  I love this name.  Adore it.  <3 it.  BUT, Babycenter.com says it is the #2 name for boys in 2011.  Broken heart  Darnit all  to heck.  Oh well, not meant to be.

FYI, one of the best sites for baby names is the Social Security website where you can find accurate accounts of most popular baby names by year and state.

Have I gone on and on enough?  Do you want to know our baby boy’s name?

Well…

We are naming Baby Boy O

Sawyer Clark Owens

And we are in love with it Open-mouthed smile

Zach informed me that part of the reason he was so enamored was because one of his favorite characters on Lost had the same name.  Go figure Smile with tongue out  Dork.

And there ya go, that’s our baby boy’s name and we’re happy to share it with everyone so we can get the world pre-introduced to our little man.

Have you thought about baby names?  Share!

Have you ever wanted to change your name?  I actually like mine, although when I was very young, I did want to be called by my middle name (Michelle) – my Mom didn’t go for this

  1. Love it! (of course.) And I also love that you’re sharing it. I am happy to be pre-introduced to little Sawyer!! :-D

  2. I love it! It’s a unique name. Congrats on making a decision that’s very exciting!! I bet Liam has been growing in popularity in 2011 because of Liam Hemsworth…

  3. I LOVE IT!!!! Its awesome AND unique!!! Great pick :)

  4. Right when I got in my car I immediately thought the same thing that it was a bummer we didn’t snap a pic! That definitely means we have to met up again girl, I had such a blast with you and we have so much more chit chatting to do!! :)

Yipeeeee you revealed the baby name!! Love love it! I actually like my name too, but when I was younger was embarrassed by it because it was so usual and it got turned into silly nicknames…you know some of them! ;) And as you know, we got the boy name down pat, but the girl one we’re definitely going to have to rehash that one! :)

  5. Love the name Sawyer – for the same reason Zach loves it! Haha.

I have a little list for potential names and have run them by Vishnu too. We are on the same page for girl names, but we get hung up on the boy names. It’s so hard to name a little Indian boy!

  6. Max def sounds like a dog’s name. Jackson is my cousin’s name and I love it. So strong! Leo is cute, but you’re right about that. Liam is what my best friend is naming her baby!! Her husband’s name is William so it’s like a nickname off of his! Sawyer Clark is a GREAT NAME. So manly and strong.Love it! Yay for picking! PS I hope you get your chocolate today, Sawyer wants some I’m sure! ha

  7. I never knew Liam was so popular. I like it though! I also love that pic – I think he’s smiling. :)

  8. I LOVE Sawyer!!
And P.S. – I’m super jealous you and Shayla got to hang out this weekend. ;)

  9. I have a baby girl name picked out already in my head, the middle name is Grace too. (I like the nickname Gracie).

As for boy names…my husband is throwing some really unique names out there and they are so unique that I didn’t really like them. They sounded like car names.

I like the name Sawyer. I watched Lost too and that’s the first thing that popped up in my head. I also think of intelligent little boy when I see Sawyer, like the writer/author type :)

My full name is very looooooonnnnngggg! Once I change my name to my married name, I might drop a few names to make it more simple

  10. Ha, I like your husband’s reasoning for liking the name. I definitely want to name my daughter (future daughter!) Vivien because I am a huge Vivien Leigh and Gone With The Wind fan. We’ll see what the future hubby says thougb, lol.

  11. LOVE IT! Original and super cute!

  12. Sawyer is such a cute name! I do like Liam too, but there will be millions of Liams this year apparently. My niece was almost named Sophia but there were 3 other girls born that day who were named Sophia so my sister in law decided to go with something else.

A friend of mine has a little girl named Adeline — it is such a pretty name, so good choice with that one too :)

I have names picked out for my future kids, but for some reason I hate sharing them because someone always has an opinion and I just don’t want to hear it!

  13. I LOVE IT!! What an awesome name. It will be cute when he’s little, and cool when he’s older. I love that.

Grace is the middle name I have picked out for when I have a girl too. Basically my husband has no say in the matter. :)

  14. Aweee. He will be a heart breaker. That is the perfect heart breaker name ha.

  15. My friend had to do the switch when it came to names and gender, too! I guess that happens more often than I realized…

  16. I LOVE the name Sawyer! it’s so unique but easy to spell- two things that were important to us when choosing a name :)

  17. So cute- love the name! It’s so strong…which I LOVE!!
We have our girl name picked out, but no boy name yet. Boy names are SO much harder than girl names, at least I think so :) We have a few ideas, but nothing is set in stone. I mean it would kind of help to have a little bean in the belly too ;) Hopefully soon!
My little nephew’s name is Liam- I love it too. But I definitely think it’s gotten really popular. I really like the not so popular names, like Sawyer! So unique & not heard of often!

  18. I LOVE that name! I wouldn’t pretend to love it if I didn’t. ;) I like Sawyer Clark a lot and it goes well with the last name. Funny, I don’t know any Liams… But I guess most are babies! I also love the name Jackson.:)

  19. It’s PERFECT!!!! :) He looks like a Sawyer. ;)

  20. I loved the name Liam for a boy but the hubby said NO! We had come down to Luke or Finn for a boy and ultimately settled with Finn. But when we found out we were having a girl, we knew right away what her name would be. We actually searched names this weekend just to make sure we weren’t overlooking any we liked.

Sawyer is such a cute boy’s name! It totally reminds me of Lost too! I’m a dork like your hubby! It is a good strong not trendy name, which is good! When you tweeted about some exciting news being posted on Monday I had a feeling it was going to be the baby’s name! Thanks for sharing, we are keeping ours a secret!

  21. Sooo cute! I thought of Sawyer from lost as soon as I read it! lol

  22. Baby names are SO hard to come up with!! But I must say – I love love love love love the name you chose. It’s perfect.

  23. Hi! I don’t think I have actually commented on your blog yet, but read regularly. You mentioned baby names..and well, that just so happens to be “my thing”. Sometime I will have to share with you how i chose my kid’s names…LONGGGGG story. haha.
My name is super common. Seems everyone is a ‘kelly’. I came across a notepad my parent’s (who were major hippies, btw) kept of the babynames they loved. ‘Moonbeam’ was at the top for a girl. Turns out they decided at the last minute to name me Kelly for some reason. Something to do with thinking that kelly wasn’t that popular of a name. Sadly…i think many other parents at that time were thinking the same thing. Honestly, I have thought about changing my name to moonbeam (once i got into college) but by then i felt it was too late.
My hubby’s name is Rocky and my kids are River and Aspen (well, Aspen’s full name Liliana Aspen Rain (long story on that one, I tell ya) so Moonbeam would have fit in quite nicely, eh? ;-)
    Anywhoo…love your blog!

  24. Oh! And I LOVE the name you have chosen! It is precious!

  25. Alicia

My coworker loved the name Liam too, but her husband didn’t so they agreed on William and she can still call him Liam, (and technically then thats not his name, so you’re not cliche!) ;) Personally I like Sawyer better anyway!

  26. Love the name! Not trendy, not outdated, masculine but not overly so. Congrats again! Love reading your baby posts – they seem so real.

  27. Heather

This was so hard for us too! I’m 24 weeks and we had the perfect boy name..then we saw girl parts! After long discussion we finally picked(and LOVE) Avery Grace & she’ll go by both names :)

  28. What a lovely name! It sounds dignified and sweet at the same time :)

I’m nowhere near baby-ville at the moment (still waiting for Mr. Right to stop hiding out on another planet), but I’ve been in love with the name Emma Rochelle for … honestly, I can’t even remember. I also love Hope, Ellie, Ani Bella, and Cara Grace for girls. For boys, I love Noah Aaron and Aiden Joseph :)

  29. Yay, I’m so glad you didn’t keep the name a secret :) I think Sawyer is so unique. Congrats on making a decision!

  30. Adorable name! I like Ethan, Evan, Adian, Emma, and Sophia. All very popular these days though – and not my hubby’s favs!

  31. So adorable :)
God help us when we have to name our babies. We can hardly decide on what to eat for dinner…

  32. This is like deciding what’s for dinner on crack!

  33. Leo, Liam, and Jack are my top baby names. Likely to change by the time I have one ;) Sawyer is a good one! I like!!

  34. i love sawyer! sooooo much. seriously! i like the names ewan and cillian as well :) i hated my name as a kid and made people call me missy. now i hate being called that and prefer melissa or misa (which is what nate calls me)

  35. AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Oh Em G! I love it!!! Okay…we were convinced we were having a boy before we were shocked that it was a girl. However, I had Ella picked out from like week 9 of being pregnant. I was dying over choosing a boys name, because we couldn’t decide on one. Funniest thing…we were HUGE LOST fans and we told our family we were naming our son Sawyer!!! ha! I loved Jackson, but Michael did not. We have our boys name decided it’s under wraps for now for baby number 2

SO EXCITING! Thanks so much for sharing!

  36. Sawyer! I love it! Gosh, I bet it is such a relief to have the name firmed up!

  37. How fun picking baby names!!!

I absolutely love the name you guys chose!! Sawyer is such a handsome name!! It made me think of lost too! I actually thought that was a great name when I first heard it on that show!! Yay for the name picked!! Gosh he is goi g to be so damn cute!!

  38. I love it Shanna! I know he is going to be so darn cute. Can you be 40 weeks yet please so I can see him!?

Oh and the dry erase board is a frame so its glass on the outside.. I can write and wipe!

  39. The names are sooo adorable! I love how unique they are, but I wouldn’t expect any less :)

  40. Love it! Perfect!

I think Liam is cute too though -and I wouldn’t let the fact that it’s a common name stop me…heck, I have the most common name in the world ;)

My sister named her baby Jaxon – Jax – it’s cute. I like the spelling “Jackson” better though. “Older” names like that and Jacob are popular…I LOVE Sawyer cause it reminds me of one of my fave books.

Leo is cute too – and if I ever get a cat, I kind of like that name for it ;) So happy for you girl! And nice for blogger meetup! Do you guys live close?!

  41. Love Sawyer!!! Max is what I had in mind if that day ever comes for us. Damn dogs! They ruin everything, lol! I wish I didn’t name my dog Rocco, or I’d pick that one! I “gave” my original boy baby name (I’m so shot!) to our friend that was recently pregnant. Now they have a baby Travis.

  43. Sawyer was so bad ass on Lost, so your son is going to be stellar and kick ass ;)

Oh, I have a boy named picked out (I mean the hubby and I! haha) and I’m hoping I never see it anywhere else or my heart might shatter. I’m about different names (not weird different, but just different), so the boy’s name we have picked out is super cool, but no one has it. The way I intend it to be! Hurry up body and decide if you wanna get preggers or not haha
